How did I get it?:
I bought it!
Sophie May has a secret.
One that she’s successfully kept for years. It’s meant that she’s had to give up her dreams of going to university and travelling the world to stay in her little village, living with her mum and working in the local teashop.
But then she meets the gorgeous Billy – an actor with ambitions to make it to the top. And when they fall in love, Sophie is whisked away from the comfort of her life into Billy’s glamorous – but ruthless – world.
Their relationship throws Sophie right into the spotlight after years of shying away from attention. Can she handle the constant scrutiny that comes with being with Billy? And most of all, is she ready for her secret heartbreak to be discovered and shared with the nation?
I picked up this book because I’d heard so much hype about it. Of course, I began to read it with a bit of anticipation. Had I bought into the hype too much? I’m happy to say, no I hadn’t! I thoroughly enjoyed Billy and Me and devoured it within a day!
Billy and Me is the debut novel from Giovanna Fletcher. It’s about an ordinary woman falling in love with a famous actor. It’s pretty much a modern day Cinderella story, which I love. I’m a sucker for a happy ending. What made me want to check out this book in particular was the fact that it was written by a lady that knows the subject of falling in love with a famous person all too well.
Sophie May is a lovely, homely character who loves books (immediately a win for me!). She lives at home with her mum and works in a local teashop alongside her best friend Molly, the older lady that owns the teashop. Sophie is such a great character because she’s so down to earth and relatable. I loved Sophie and Molly’s friendship. It was so heart-warming.
Billy and Me is different to the typical chick-lit because Sophie and Billy get together early on in the story, so you don’t have the usual ‘Will they, won’t they?’ scenario. This is great because the focus is on the deeper issues that come with the kind of relationship they have when half of the couple is incredibly famous. I liked that the book alternated between Sophie’s small village life and the fast-paced nature of London. It was a lovely contrast and so realistic as well. I loved Sophie and Billy’s relationship. It was sweet and very easy to root for.
Billy and Me is a easy to read and hard to put down debut novel. I really enjoyed reading it. Giovanna Fletcher has done a fabulous job with her first book, creating some relatable and extremely likeable characters. I look forward to what she writes next as she’s bound to get better and better. I even think she might turn into one of my “Must buy” authors as soon as their book comes out!
