This Is W.A.R

How did I get it?:
Edelweiss- thanks to Soho Teen

This is W.A.R. begins with a victim who can no longer speak for herself, and whose murder blossoms into a call-to-arms. Enter four very different girls, four very different motives to avenge Willa Ames-Rowan, and only one rule to start: Destroy James Gregory and his family at any cost. Willa’s initials spell the secret rallying cry that spurs the foursome to pool their considerable resources and deliver their particular brand of vigilante justice. Innocence is lost, battles are won—and the pursuit of the truth ultimately threatens to destroy them all.

I have been looking forward to reading this book ever since I was approved for it on Edelweiss. I had heard very mixed opinions about it. So of course, this immediately intrigued me. I think This is W.A.R is a decent read, but something seems to stop it being an amazing read for me.

I liked how the book started with a mystery element immediately hooking the reader in. Straight away we want to know who Willa was and who killed her. As the book unfolds we find out that each of the characters are hiding their own secrets.

The characters are good, but I didn’t really find myself caring for what happened to them. I did like how we found out about the four characters. The authors have certainly created four unique characters. Some are immediately likeable, some take a while to warm to.

I think after the initial excitement the book loses some momentum. I didn’t feel as gripped as I did at the beginning which was a shame. I know this book is aimed at the Young Adult genre, but the revenge the girls plotted was incredibly childish. I would’ve liked a creepier revenge story, but maybe that’s just me.

Would I recommend it?:
Yes!- I would recommend this book to those that enjoy the Young Adult genre. Don’t expect a completely creepy revenge story but an easy to read mystery.
