How did I get it?:

A debut novel that will leave you breathless.

I was really looking forward to reading Divergent. It’s another book that has been so hyped, but for some reason I wasn’t worried that I wouldn’t like it. Dystopian is my thing. So I was pretty confident to begin this series. I’m so glad that my confidence wasn’t destroyed. My instinct was right. I absolutely loved Divergent!

Divergent’s plot is easy to follow. In the future the population is split into five factions which are based on personalities and life choices. Until the child is 16, they live in their parents’ faction. They then go through a process to chose their own faction. A lot of the time, they choose the same faction that their parents picked, but not always. Our protagonist Beatrice is part of the Abnegation, this faction values selflessness over everything else. Beatrice feels like she doesn’t belong, but feels guilty about picking another faction. Beatrice is assessed and the results show that she has the qualities for three different factions. Beatrice has to decide whether to stay with her parents or choose a different faction. A decision that could completely tear her away from her family and everything that she’s ever known.

I was completely engrossed right from the start and I just kept on reading. The book does follow Beatrice’s journey, but we also learn about other factions as well. The plot is so well put together. It flows so well and is fast-paced so the reader really never has time to get bored!

I absolutely adored Beatrice as a protagonist. She’s such a strong, female lead. The character develops beautifully throughout the book. I was rooting for her throughout. I also really liked the character of Four.

Veronica Roth is an incredibly talented writer. Divergent has everything for me. Great characters, good dialogue, action and a fast-paced, interesting plot. Divergent also has a little bit of romance. The romance is subtle and doesn’t overtake the plot. I truly think that there is something in Divergent for everyone.

I can’t believe that this book was Veronica Roth’s debut novel. It really is an outstanding read and I can’t wait to read Insurgent. I have a feeling I’ll be reading it soon and putting in a pre-order for Allegiant. I just love this series!

Would I recommend it?:
Without a doubt!

  1. I really liked Divergent, but I didn’t like Insurgent at all. It felt like more of the same thing. Beatrice really got on my nerves by the end of the book. I don’t think I am going to finish the series.
