Top Ten Covers I Wish I Could Redesign

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the wonderful The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they come up with a list for us bloggers to complete.

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is about the covers we wish we could redesign. I admit, I do judge books by their covers. I can’t help it. It’s the first thing I’m drawn to, be it a good or bad design. The covers I’ve pictured are the covers of the books I’ve read. I know that sometimes there is a redesign, but I’ve pinpointed the version I’ve read.

The Casual Vacancy- J.K Rowling– I just find this cover uninspiring. If it wasn’t for the author’s name, I would’ve totally walked past it in a bookstore.

16187The Little HousePhilippa Gregory– I absolutely adore this book, but again, I picked it up because of the author’s name, not the cover. I probably would’ve missed out otherwise!

2728527The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie SocietyMary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows– This cover is quite boring to me. I picked up the book on recommendation and because of the cool title. Definitely not because of the cover.

7601302The Swan Thieves- Elizabeth Kostova– I can’t remember what drew me to this book, it could be the author again. I know for sure, it wasn’t the cover.

4541129Little BirdCamilla Way– I think this cover isn’t particularly inspiring, but the story inside is brilliant.

3162006The Other Hand- Chris Cleave– This book has also been published under the name Little Bee. (Don’t you hate it when that happens?!) I absolutely adore this book, but the cover isn’t particularly appealing.

4268157Perfect ChemistrySimone Elkeles– Covers like this just make me cringe!

1162543Breaking DawnStephenie Meyer– I wasn’t particularly blown away by any of the Twilight covers, but this one is particularly odd.

14050The Time Traveler’s WifeAudrey Niffenegger- This is another good book where the cover didn’t immediately appeal to me

The Bone SeasonSamantha Shannon– I wouldn’t have picked this book up if it wasn’t for the hype surrounding it.

What are the covers you wish you could redesign? Feel free to link me to your posts!

  1. I actually don’t mind the covers for the Perfect Chemistry series, even though they probably could be better. I’ve just grown to see them as a representation of the series. I love the simplicity and symbolism of the Twilight Saga’s covers, though I’m biased since I LOVE the books. Some other covers on here could definitely use some improvement. Thanks for stopping by!

    • You’re welcome Rachel, thanks for the return visit. I’m not so much a fan of the Twilight series, I like it, but I wasn’t blown away. Maybe I would feel differently if I did like the series.

  2. Out of those covers, I dislike Perfect Chemistry the most. So, okay, there’s a couple on the cover… yay? Seriously, couldn’t they include some other element of the story on it? At least with the others you can kinda sorta get some of the elements, even if it’s just in relation to the story. For instance, even though The Casual Vacancy has a rather dull cover, you can still see that it has to do with voting if you didn’t know what the phrase ‘casual vacancy’ meant before reading the synopsis. Breaking Dawn, too, it’s about getting all the right pieces into place before the big fight/war. But Perfect Chemistry… it’s just ‘no thank you.’

And for The Other Hand/Little Bee, I prefer this cover, but I cannot even begin to explain why….

    • Yes, I really don’t think that Perfect Chemistry shows off the book as much as it could. With The Casual Vacancy, I don’t think I would’ve picked it up, if it wasn’t by J.K Rowling. I just think it’s boring. (I didn’t actually like the book when I read it either, but that’s a different story!) I like that cover of The Other Hand/Little Bee too. I also don’t know why! Perhaps because it is quite unusual.

  3. Why oh why is there so many uninspiring covers out there? How do authors and publishers expect you to pick up a book that looks so completely boring?

Great list, couldn’t agree more πŸ™‚

  4. Great list! Casual Vacancy is appearing on a lot, including mine – it’s just so lazy! Also agree with The Other Hand/Little Bee/whatever else they decide to call it and Perfect Chemistry, they do nothing for the actual book.

  5. The Casual Vacancy is probably the worst cover out there. And Time Traveler’s wife made it to my initial list but was cut at the last second. It’s okay – but could use some work.

  6. I considered adding The Casual Vacancy to my list as well. I haven’t heard of many of these other books, but I agree with you on the covers. They don’t make me want to read any of them anytime soon.

    Here is my TTT:

  7. That’s the first time I’ve ever seen that cover edition for Kostova’s The Swan Thieves. I’m all for minimalist but that might be a little too on the minimalist side of things, lol.

I’ve never read any of Philippa Gregory’s books but her covers–at least for her medieval England books–have been pretty. That cover your featured on your like–yikes O_O lol

  8. I totally agree! These covers aren’t all that great. I especially think The Casual Vacancy could use some work. I honestly think it’s mainly appealing due to J.K. Rowling’s name across the cover.

  9. These covers are for sure hideous. Especially The Little House. That floating head is creepy.

Oh and I’m so glad you mentioned The Time Travelers Wife. I totally forgot that one. When I first saw that cover in the store I thought it was a murder mystery about a pedifile. lol

  10. Philippa Gregory’s covers could be a lot better. I’m glad her White Queen series became a TV show and there were tie-in covers. I do like the Bone Season cover, but I don’t think I would have been interested in it without the hype either. Great list!

  11. I so agree with Casual Vacancy and Breaking Dawn… I actually haven’t read Casual Vacancy yet! and I have to admit that part of the problem would be the cover…
    Breaking dawn… just weird!

  12. I actually like the Time Traveler’s Wife cover, maybe just because I’ve become so used to it over multiple readings. I agree about Casual Vacancy — so dull! I think I’ve seen a version of the Elizabeth Kostova book with a more interesting cover — the white on white isn’t very appealing at all. Great list — I really drew a blank this week!

  13. Casual Vacancy is a super noticeable cover, but not a favorite of mine for sure. The colors are just weird for a book. and it’s boring. That Breaking Dawn book definitely needs to go and it took me the longest time to even figure out what was on the cover of The Time Traveler’s Wife. It was a really good book, but that picture on the front is just bad.

Thanks for stopping by My TTT

    • They don’t do much for the story and I’m pretty sure have put people off reading them. I don’t think The Time Traveler’s Wife is an awful cover, but I loved the book and would like to see a more intriguing cover.

  14. You’ve picked some really uninspiring book covers, and I totally agree with your thoughts on them. I think the Twilight book covers were supposed to be symbolic or something, I cannot think of another reason why the covers would have been chosen.
