The Look

How did I get it?:
I bought it for part of my Luna’s Picks challenge!

When Ted is spotted by a model agency, she can’t believe it. At the same time her gorgeous sister, Ava, is diagnosed with cancer. With her world turned upside down, Ted has a lot of growing up to do, some of it in five-inch platforms. Can she be a supermodel and a super sister? Or will she have to choose between fame and family?

The Look was one of the books Luna from Luna’s Little Library recommended to me to read this month. The synopsis immediately captured my attention. (I also really liked the pink page edges. I can’t help it, they’re so pretty and appealing). If I was judging it on its cover alone and the pretty pink pages, I wouldn’t have expected such an engrossing, heartfelt story. It’s certainly looks like a fluffier read than it was.

The Look tells the story of Ted who is spotted by a modelling agency’s talent scout. At the same time Ted’s beautiful sister Ava is diagnosed with lymphoma and is about to start chemotherapy and radiotherapy. You’d think that this is a really depressing read, but there are a lot of lighter and humorous moments that really lift the story.

I thought Ted was a fantastic protagonist. She was incredibly easy to warm to. I loved reading about her modelling escapades. I absolutely loved her relationship with her sister Ava. They’re incredibly different people, but their relationship is believable and feels incredibly realistic. I loved how Ava was thinking of her sister, despite being so ill.

Sophia Bennett’s writing is fantastic. I couldn’t put it down. I’m really looking forward to reading You Don’t Know Me, another book which has been highly recommended!

Would I recommend it?:
Of course!

  1. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed this book! I love when a book that originally drew me in because of something non-text related (like the pink pages) later draws me in for the story.

  2. I didn’t know what this book was about, but I have seen it in a bookstore and I know what you mean about those pink edges! They look very pretty but they were also what kept me from picking the book up. I don’t know, I just expected something too cute and fluffy. Good to know that it’s actually not so fluffy as I thought. I’m much more interested in reading it now!
