Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely The Broke and The Bookish. Each week they come up with a list for us to complete. This week the topic is Top Ten Books That Will Make You Cry.
I haven’t full on bawled to a book very often, but many books have made me feel incredibly emotional, so I’ve listed them below in no particular order.
As ever, click on the book image to get to the Goodread’s page for the book!
And For Your Information- Denise Deegan– This little trilogy isn’t well know enough for my liking. This book is the second in the series and in my opinion, the best. I really loved reading it and felt such a wide range of emotions all the way through it. READ IT!
Hurt– Tabitha Suzuma– This book was a slow burner for me, but I ended up feeling really moved by it.
Me Before You- Jojo Moyes– I didn’t expect to feel so much for this book, but I really did! It’s possibly one of my favourite books of all time. I know they’re making it into a movie and I’m terrified. I really don’t want the movie to wreck this beautiful book. Argh, I love it.
Undone– Cat Clarke– This book left me speechless at the end. I was completely overwhelmed by it.
The Son– Michel Rostain- The author of this book lost his son to meningitis. With this book, he explains his grief for his son, using his son’s voice. So emotional. It really moved me and one I have to shout READ IT at you for. I apologise for shouting! 😉
Cross My Heart And Hope To Live– Carmen Reid- This is another really emotional book. It was probably one of my favourites from last year. It takes place in Brussels in 1940, as the Nazi’s invade Belgium.
The Book Thief– Markus Zusak– I expect I’ll see this book around a lot this week. It really is a superb book. Again, I have worries about the movie adaptation but I hope it’s done well.
Sarah’s Key– Tatiana DeRosnay– I read this book pre-blog! It really moved me.
A Child Called It– Dave Pelzer– This book shocked me, moved me and disgusted me at points. A true story of a survivor.
P.S I Love You– Cecelia Ahern– I love Cecelia Ahern. Her writing is just brilliant! I thought this was an incredibly emotional read. This is a book that has been adapted to a movie and I have to say… the book is better! If you haven’t read the book, I’d seriously recommend reading it! Don’t be put off by the cover if you’re not a chick lit fan.. my sister enjoyed it and she HATES chick lit!
The Book Thief and Sarah’s Key ended up on my list this week too. With the latter, I actually had to put the book down, it was so sad 😦
My TTT
It was incredibly sad 😦 I think Sarah’s Key is so underrated so it’s nice to see someone love it too!
Unfortunately the movie version of The Book Thief did not turn out so well. I am, however, looking forward to The Fault in our Stars.
That’s a shame! I shall still check it out, but thank you for the warning!
Sarah’s Key almost made my list (but as noted under Flowers for Algernon, I had to TRY and limit myself to 10 books. And not 30 hahaha). It’s so crazy intense! And unsurprisingly, The Book Thief strikes again haha
Yes, it’s so hard when there are so many books out there that make you feel emotional. I loved your list though!
I bought a copy of Me Before You the other day. It’s weird – it’s not a new book but I heard of it for the first time on Wednesday and by Saturday I’d heard three people talk about it independently from each other. When a book is stalking you that much you just have to read it! I’m looking forward to reading it and will make sure I have a box of tissues on hand just in case!
It’s definitely worth checking out. I think it was a sign that it kept stalking you! I really hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
We have Me Before You and The Book Thief in common. I have a copy of Hurt but haven’t had a chance to read it. Thanks for the heads up on the tears. Cross My Heart sounds really good. Great list!
Both are wonderful books! I hope you enjoy Hurt when you get around to reading it. It feels a bit slow at the start but it definitely picks up!
I’ve only heard of two books on this list! It’s the first time I’m participating in this meme properly, but already I have SOOO many books to add to my TBR!
Beware, you do add many books to your TBR every week! 😀
The Book Thief is on my list too. But other than that one I haven’t read any of the others you have listed.
Here’s my TTT

The Book Thief is an incredibly emotional read. I’ll just check out your TTT!
The Book Thief is in my TBR. And I absolutely loved P.S. I love you…..I cried bucket-fulls! And I too think the movie did not do justice to the book.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that felt that way about the film of P.S I Love You.
🙂
I almost added ‘A Child Called It’ to my list, but it had been so long since I read it I didn’t. A true survivor indeed. Great list!
Thank you 🙂 I still think about that book. Truly shocking!
Me too, it’s been so long since I’ve read it and I definitely could not stomach a re-read. His story was devastating. Did you read the other 2?
I did! I don’t think I could ever re-read them either. As you say, it’s so devastating!
You’re better than I. I had to stop after the first one.
P.S. I Love You destroyed me. I have the movie and won’t watch it because the book made me cry so much haha.
Great list Chrissi!
Thank you! The movie doesn’t do the book justice. I absolutely adored the book.
They’re making a movie of Me Before You? Eeek! I think that’s one movie I won’t be watching, I remember reading this at the beginning of last year, not long after my mum died, and literally being a great big sobbing, snotty mess on the train whilst the other passengers looked at me like I was crazy! Book Thief is on mine and I remember shedding a tear or twenty over Undone & PS I love You. Great list!
Thanks Fi! They are. I’m so torn about seeing it or not. I loved the book so, so much. I really don’t want it to be ruined. I can totally understand you feeling that way, especially after losing your mum. 😦
I feel so dumb for leaving out The Book Thief. I read it for the first time about a month ago and bawled like baby, but totally forgot about it for today’s list. 😀 Thanks for stopping by my blog. Happy Tuesday!
You’re welcome! Thanks for the return visit. The Book Thief is such a powerful book. Hope you had a lovely Tuesday!
Sarah’s Key is so painful to read, and the movie made me cry too. I still need to read Me Before You! I was surprised that I liked P.S. I Love You (not usually a chick lit fan) — and I will admit that I initially read it just because I’d heard that James Marsters (spike!) would be in the movie. 🙂 Great list!
Thanks Lisa! I haven’t seen the movie of Sarah’s Key! Do you think it’s worth checking out, considering I loved the book so much? P.S I Love You is such a brilliant book!
Ooh some of those sound like deep literary reads. Great list. I honestly haven’t read any of those, some on purpose (example: Sarah’s Key)
They are fantastic. I can’t recommend them enough. I can understand why you wouldn’t want to read Sarah’s Key!
I didn’t know PS I Love You was a book. The movie was so freaking sad.
It was! I think the book is even sadder.
I haven’t read any of these except The Book Thief, but I definitely get why so many people have it on their lists today! ;_;
It’s an incredible book. It’s not a surprise that it’s been on so many lists!
I didn’t know they were turning Me Before You Into a movie, though I think it will make a great one! The Book Thief almost made my list, but not quite. I haven’t seen the movie version of that yet, but I’m looking forward to checking it out on DVD. I haven’t read P.S. I Love You but I did see the movie, and it definitely choked me up!
Yes, they are! I really hope they do justice to the book! It terrifies me, as it’s one of my favourite books ever!
I haven’t read any of these, but The Book Thief is on my TBR list. Hopefully I will get to it soon.
Great list and thanks for stopping by my TTT!
You’re welcome Jacque, thanks for the return visit. I hope you enjoy The Book Thief.
I just bought The Book Thief, I need to read it soon.Nice lilst.
Here is My Top 10 Tuesday
Thank you 🙂 I hope you enjoy it!
I’ve been putting off reading Me Before You because of the tears, but I promised myself I’d read it this winter. Seeing it on these lists is not making me feel better about it, but I know I’ll end up loving it!
It’s an incredible book, but get the tissues ready!
I’ve only read the Book Thief from this list but I agree it was super sad. It looks like I’m going to need to add some books to my TBR pile now!
I hope you enjoy any books you do add to your TBR pile!
I’ve not read that one by Tabitha Suzuma, but Forbidden destroyed me. (and the mother in it, is far and away my most hated character ever.
I completely agree. The mother in Forbidden is awful!
I haven’t read any of these except The Book Thief, but I agree that it is heartbreaking. I’ve seen it on lots of lists, and it would have made mine had I not tried to stay away from the obvious.
Thanks for stopping by my TTT!
You’re welcome! Thanks for the return visit. I just had to include The Book Thief even though it is an obvious choice.
Great picks. I have Hurt sitting on my TBR shelf, and can’t wait to read it. I picked Tabitha Suzuma’s Forbidden, because that book had me absolutely sobbing. My TTT 🙂
Hurt is a great book! I really hope you enjoy it.
Oh, man, A Child Called It was so, so heartbreaking! I really want to read the rest of his memoirs but I can’t imagine putting myself through all those feels 😦
It really was! I’ve read the rest of his memoirs. They’re tough to get through.
I haven’t read any of these books, but The Book Thief is definitely on my TBR list!
Good! I think everyone should read The Book Thief 🙂
The Book Thief was so heartwrenching! :(( I’ve been seeing Me Before You on a lot of TTT lists today, guess I’ll have to check it out soon! Great list!
Definitely check it out soon! It’s one of my favourite books ever!
I haven’t read any of these books except PS I love You and I have to agree that IS a real tearjerker! Adding some to my TBR now. Great list!
My TTT
Thank you Kimi! I think these books are well worth checking out.
I cannot believe I forgot The Book Thief in my list! But hey, it’s a good cry, and it’s on your list, so I’m good. 🙂 MAX!
It is! I think there are so many tearjerkers to choose from.
I haven’t read you first few book, and they look great!. I’ll have to add them to my to-read list!
I hope you enjoy them! 🙂
Great to hear that Hurt gave you some deep feels. I think I came across this book a while ago but forgot about it until now.
It’s a very powerful book. I hope you enjoy it!
Oh gosh, I haven’t read any of these books. I have Cat Clarke’s book on my itouch but haven’t picked it up yet, Now I’m scared. hahaha!
Great list!
Oh my goodness. Undone is SO good. I really hope you enjoy it!
Unique list – I don’t think I’ve seen any of these on anyone else’s lists this week. And this is only the second list I’ve seen w/o Harry Potter 🙂 Awesome list!
Aw, thank you. I try to add some books that aren’t very well known!
Thanks for stopping by my TTT! Great list, very unique 🙂 I haven’t read many of the books on your list but I adored The Book Thief and it toally made me bawl. I read A Child Called It a long time a good 10 years ago if not more, when I was in high school, and I remember what a challenging and moving read it was, as were its sequels. A very much want to read Me Before You, preferably before it comes out as a movie 🙂
You’re welcome! Thanks for the return visit. I hope you enjoy Me Before You. It’s a very special book.
I actually don’t think I heard of any of these but they look great! Me Before You definitely sounds touching. Thanks for stopping by
You’re welcome! Thanks for the return visit. It is an incredibly touching book.
So many people seem to have cried at Me Before You and it just makes me both wary and eager to pick it up. I read A Child Called It years ago, and I found it so brutal I wasn’t able to re-read it ever again, and I couldn’t bring myself to read the rest of the books in the series either. Thanks for stopping by my Top Ten!
You’re welcome, thanks for the return visit. Me Before You is such a good book, it’s worth picking up! I hope it lives up to the hype. Yes, A Child Called It is so brutal 😦 It really upset me!
I hardly cry when I read. I don’t know, maybe I haven’t read the right book. I have a tendency to avoid sad books as well, which might just be the reason why I don’t cry. Anyway, I haven’t read any of the books in your list, most of them are unheard of, but The Book Thief is in my TBR, I guess I’ll see what it will do to me.
My take on this week TTT
I don’t always cry, sometimes I just feel incredibly moved. It takes a lot for a book to make me cry real tears! I’ll just check out your TTT!
I love seeing what makes everyone emotional. I haven’t read any of these except THE BOOK THIEF. I’m especially anxious to read ME BEFORE YOU.
It’s a beautiful book. I hope you enjoy it, when you do get to reading it!
Definitely agree with Hurt and Me Before You. I really need to read some Cat Clarke! And I feel like a bad person for not having read The Book Thief.
You definitely need to read Cat Clarke! She’s amazing! I read The Book Thief when it first came out. I highly recommend it!
