The Girl You Left Behind

One single mum
With two jobs and two children, Jess Thomas does her best day after day. But it’s hard on your own. And sometimes you take risks you shouldn’t. Because you have to . . .

One chaotic family
Jess’s gifted, quirky daughter Tanzie is brilliant with numbers, but without a helping hand she’ll never get the chance to shine. And Nicky, Jess’s teenage stepson, can’t fight the bullies alone.
Sometimes Jess feels like they’re sinking . . .

One handsome stranger
Into their lives comes Ed Nicholls, a man whose life is in chaos, and who is running from a deeply uncertain future. But he has time on his hands. He knows what it’s like to be lonely. And he wants to help . . .

One unexpected love story
The One Plus One is a captivating and unconventional romance from Jojo Moyes about two lost souls meeting in the most unlikely circumstances.

It may not come as a surprise to regular readers of my blog that I love Jojo Moyes! Her book Me Before You is one of my favourite books of all time. I tend to use it in a Top Ten list whenever I can, because it is THAT good. I also really enjoyed The Girl You Left Behind, so I couldn’t wait to get stuck into The One Plus One.

The One Plus One is about a family who to me are so normal! They’re seen as a bit chaotic (reminds me of my family! 😉 ) but to me, they were really real. All too often in literature, we read about families where the character is famous or their parents are. It’s refreshing to read a story about a ‘real’ family with normal problems that we all experience. It made the family immediately relatable and loveable.

The One Plus One is character driven and Jojo once again, has created some fantastic characters. I absolutely loved Jess. She is the mother of two children, one her own and one her ex partner’s. Jess has two jobs and raises the children by herself. Her life isn’t easy, and they struggle for money. Jess has the opportunity to send her maths prodigy daughter Tanzie to private school. Only trouble is, she has to find the money to make up 10% of the fees. With the way Jess and her family live, from one pay check to the next, it won’t be likely that she can make it. This made my heart go out to Jess. It’s so true. Many families do struggle in this way. They want the best for their children, but money is always an obstacle. Jess cares for her stepson Nicky, who is suffering from bullying because he’s a bit different. He loves wearing make up and skinny jeans. The bullying he suffers from is horrendous. The family just can’t seem to catch a break! As in all good books, they have a saviour! Ed Nicholls. Ed is a much better position financially than the Thomas family, but he comes with his own issues. Ed takes the family and their dog Norman (I loved Norman!) on a road trip to Scotland so Tanzie can try and win some money to pay for the fees for the private school she has been offered a place  in. I absolutely loved reading about their road trip. It was funny, yet moving at the same time.

I can’t speak highly enough of Jojo’s writing. The characters she’s created and situations they encounter are just so believable. I easily warmed to them and read their story quickly.  No matter what Jojo writes, I seem to adore. The One Plus One confirms that good things happen to those that wait. Even if you have to wait for a while and work for it, eventually you’ll be rewarded.

Would I recommend it?:
Without a doubt!
