I have to admit, this fairy tale didn’t really do it for me. It’s a strange little tale.
The Boy Who Left Home To Find Out About The Shivers centres around a father and his two sons. The youngest son tells his father that he wants to find out about the shivers, because he doesn’t know what fear is. A sexton tells the father that he could teach the boy. The sexton dresses as a ghost and then sends the boy to ring the church bells at midnight. He tries to scare the boy, but the boy is unafraid and pushes the sexton down the stairs, breaking his leg. The boy’s father kicks him out of the house. The boy continues to explore how he can shiver with many different situations coming his way.
There have been various adaptations of this story, although I certainly hadn’t come across it before. It’s an interesting story to think about fear, but for me it wasn’t exciting enough to truly capture my attention!
