This week’s Fairy Tale is Hansel and Gretel. Now, this is one of my favourite fairy tales. I’m pretty sure that you’d all know the story, but I shall give it a run down nevertheless. It involves a horrible stepmother, who encourages the children’s father to take the children deep into the woods and leave them there. Hansel is clever and drops pieces of bread to lead their way back home. This isn’t always an effective method though as the next time Hansel and Gretel find that the birds have picked up the bread and now they really are lost! Hansel and Gretel explore the woods and find a cottage made of food. They’re so starving that they start to pick off bits of the house to eat. A witch lives in the cottage and she’s delibrately designed the house so that it lures children in. She takes the children in and puts Hansel in a cage to fatten him up. Hansel, being clever, sticks out a bone so the poor sighted witch can’t tell he’s putting on weight. The witch also tries to kill Gretel, by putting her in the oven. Gretel has a flash of genius and manages to get the witch to bend down near the oven. Gretel pushes the witch into the oven!
I used to love this fairy tale when I was younger. I loved how the main characters were heroic and I loved how they were portrayed as clever too! It’s definitely one of the better know fairy tales and I can certainly see why!
