Fairy Tale Friday- Rumpelstiltskin

Most people are familiar with Rumpelstiltskin, the story of an angry little imp, a miller, his daughter and the king. The miller promises the King that his daughter can spin straw into gold. The king takes the daughter into a room and demands that she should spin the straw into gold by the morning or risk her life. The daughter sobs as she knows she can’t do it, an angry imp like man appears in the room and says he will spin the straw into gold in return for some precious jewellery. This happens again the next night in exchange for something precious. On the third night, the daughter has nothing more to give so she promises her first born child to the little imp as the king has offered to marry her, if she spins the most straw into gold, again, her life is in danger (I’m not sure why she wants to marry this man so much! 😉 ) The king keeps his promise and the daughter and the king get married.

When the first born child comes along, the imp returns ready to take the child. The new queen bargains with the imp and they decide if she can guess his name within three days then she shall be able to keep her child. The queen hires a messenger to try and find out the imp’s name. Finally, the imp is discovered singing about the bargain and revealing his name. The next day the queen tries out some names, then pulls out Rumpelstiltskin. Rumpelstiltskin is so angry, he stamps, and his body splits into two (eww!).

This video from Carrie Hope Fletcher discusses Rumpelstiltskin and his stupidity!
