Top Ten Popular Books That Lived Up To The Hype For Me!

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It’s all about love of lists, love of literature and bringing bookish people together.

This week’s list is all about popular books that lived up to the hype. We all know the ones… the ones that everyone is talking about. All too often books are destroyed by the hype monster for me. These are the books that worked for me…even though they were hyped!

Book images go to Goodreads!

A Monster Calls

I knew this book was highly thought of. I was worried but I really needn’t have been, because it was a stunning read.

Divergent (Divergent, #1)

I know the series doesn’t live up to the hype as a whole, but I loved the first book! 🙂

Wonder

I loved this book. So simple but powerful.

Me Before You (Me Before You, #1)

I had heard good things but it wasn’t as hyped as it is now. I still adore this book though.

Lies We Tell Ourselves

I adored this book! 🙂 Such a powerful story.

The Help

I will always recommend this story. I think it’s amazing! The movie is just as good as well. I love a faithful adaptation.

Made You Up

This story is fabulous. I was immediately gripped by it.

They Both Die at the End

This is heart-breaking. I expected it to be and it totally was!

Paper Butterflies

This wasn’t as hyped as most books on this list, but it was within my bookish friends. A very intense but important read.

Noughts & Crosses (Noughts & Crosses, #1)

I was so late to the party with this series but it completely captured my heart.

What have you put on your list this week? Feel free to leave a link to your post and I’ll stop by!

  1. Never read “Divergent,” but I do really like the movies! Also, still have to make time for “Me Before You.” Happy Top Ten Tuesday, Chrissi. 🙂

  2. The Help! What a great choice on that one! I picked up the book after seeing the movie (like too many people haha) and totally agree – it’s fantastic. Great picks!

  3. I haven’t read any of these (I think I tried picking up Divergent at the height of it’s fame but… for some reason couldn’t get into it?) I’m still a little fearful of picking up The Both Die at the End despite hearing SO MANY good things because… sad books are sad, I guess?

  4. How could I forget to include A Monster Calls on my list this week? Such a beautiful, powerful book. I have Me Before You on my list this week too. It’s one of those books that I heard so much about that I was sure it couldn’t possibly be that good — but it was! I loved Lies We Tell Ourselves as well… and I’m ashamed to admit that I still haven’t read Wonder (although at least I have a copy now, so I”m making progress). Great list!

  5. Divergent was definitely the best of the series. I agree with a lot of your choices. I have Made You Up and need to read it soon!! I loved Eliza and Her Monsters and I’m hoping that I love that one too!

  6. Wonder made my list, and I cannot stop talking about how amazing this story was. So good! I think I read Me Before You due to hype, and Lou became one of my favorite fictional characters.

  7. Totally agree about The Help too actually. I loved that way more than I thought I would. I’ve heard lots of amazing things about They Both Die At The End as well, definitely adding it to my wishlist pile

  8. A big yes to A Monster Calls, Divergent (like you, only the first book), Wonder, The Help and Made You Up!! I loved all of these titles… And I’m keeping fingers and toes crossed I’ll be able to add They Both Die At The End to this list very soon.

  9. I’ve been *dying* to read a few of these, I’m so glad to hear they live up to the hype!! They Both Die At The End, Divergent, and Wonder… For me, I’ve been reading a lot of older books and classics lately, and the ones that have lived up to the hype were To Kill A Mockingbird, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and Little Women – I thought there was no way any of them could impress me, and yet here we are! 😉

  10. I loved Divergent enough that I have it in four languages! I haven’t completed reading it in Russian yet because it’s really difficult, but I have read it in German and Spanish (and English, of course).

The other day Goodreads recommended Noughts and Crosses, and I ended up putting it on my TBR, but I haven’t read it yet.

  11. A Monster Calls was so very, very good. And Me Before You was amazing. Haven’t read too many others on your list but I’m definitely going to have to check them out!
