To sequel or not to sequel? – Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It’s all about love of lists, love of literature and bringing bookish people together.

This week’s list is all about sequels. I decided to split the list up into sequels I would want and sequels that weren’t needed… in my opinion of course.

Book images go to Goodreads!

The Bell Jar

The Bell Jar Sylvia Plath– Although I know this couldn’t happen, I’d be intrigued to know what happened next to Esther.

The Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher In The RyeJ.D. Salinger– I’m interested to see how Holden grew up.

Lord of the Flies

Lord Of The FliesWilliam Golding– Whilst I’d be nervous to read a sequel to one of my favourite books, I would definitely want to see what happened next.

I'll Meet You There

I’ll Meet You ThereHeather Demetrios– This was one of my favourite books, I’d be interested to follow Skylar again.

The Crimson Petal and the White

Crimson Petal and The WhiteMichel Faber– What happened to Sugar?

To not sequel

Me Before You (Me Before You, #1)

Me Before YouJojo Moyes- I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but I was NOT a fan of the next two books. They were okay, but in my opinion unnecessary.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Charlie and The Chocolate FactoryRoald Dahl– This might be sacrilege to criticise the awesome Roald Dahl, but I didn’t think Charlie and The Great Glass Elevator was needed! It didn’t match to the first for me.

Rebel Belle (Rebel Belle, #1)

Rebel BelleRachel Hawkins– I didn’t enjoy the start of Miss Mayhem at all.

The Selection (The Selection, #1)

The SelectionKiera Cass– Whilst I didn’t mind the sequels (although I didn’t love them and have only read until the third) I personally think that The Selection would have been better as a standalone book.

Matched (Matched, #1)

MatchedAlly Condie– This is another series that has been done so much. I think it would have been more powerful by itself.

What are your books that you’d love to have a sequel for? Let me know! Feel free to leave a link to your post and I’ll stop by!

Ten Series That I’ve Given Up On

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It’s all about love of lists, love of literature and bringing bookish people together.

This week’s list is all about the series that we’ve given up on. It feels quite negative to do a list like this. I always feel sorry for the author’s that have put effort into these stories. However, not every book will work for every reader. I’m happy to show these books in case others are interested in them!

Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1)

Oh boy. I feel like my list could offend some people this week. I just didn’t enjoy this book. I found it to be a little too cringe-y for my liking.

Matched (Matched, #1)

I enjoyed the first book but then I began to read more widely and realised it was quite same-y. I tried to start the second book but it didn’t engage me enough and I stopped reading.

Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1)

Again, the first book was alright, I just don’t feel like committing myself to this series.

The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic (Shopaholic, #1)

I liked this series despite it being a bit ridiculous. After book 6 though I was done with the series and the character.

Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1)

Sorry fans of Cassandra Clare! Her writing just doesn’t work for me.

Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1)

I really wanted to love this book but it just didn’t work for me!

The Selection (The Selection, #1)

Read to Book 3. I have no interest in continuing the series!

Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1)

Here’s another one that I wanted to love. Unfortunately it just wasn’t my sort of thing. I tried the second book, but gave up!

Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1)

I didn’t think that when I started this series that I’d ever put this series on a list like today’s. However, after book 4, I had just lost interest in the series. They got a little too long for my liking and the plot wasn’t what I wanted it to be.

Rebel Belle (Rebel Belle, #1)

I enjoyed the first book, but then heard really mixed reviews for the next book. It definitely made me lose interest.

So there we have it. Series I don’t intend to finish. Please don’t feel sad if your favourite book is here! I can honestly say I gave them all a go but they didn’t work for me! I’m glad that they did for you!

Feel free to leave a link to your post and I’ll stop by!

Ten Bookish Worlds That I’d Never Want To Live In

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It’s all about love of lists, love of literature and bringing bookish people together.

This week’s Top Ten list is all about bookish worlds that we’d really hate to live in! This is a fun one!

As ever, book images go to Goodreads!

The Program (The Program, #1)

The Program Suzanne Young– Suicide being an epidemic is not a nice world at all.

The Selection (The Selection, #1)

The Selection seriesKiera Cass- I just hate every single thing about this world!

Matched (Matched, #1)

Matched- Ally Condie– This one is just a no no for me. I hate the idea of being matched with someone else and having to live with them forever! What if you hate each other?! I couldn’t cope.

Wither (The Chemical Garden, #1)

The Chemical Gardens trilogyLauren DeStefano– This again is a very scary world. People not living past their twenties? People can’t live to see the children they have to pop out for Science!

Not a Drop to Drink (Not a Drop to Drink, #1)

Not A Drop To DrinkMindy McGinnis– This terrifies me. A world where there’s no water? Wah.

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1)

PanemThe Hunger GamesSuzanne Collins– No. Just no. The amount of fighting? Worst nightmare.

Unwind (Unwind, #1)

UnwindNeal Shusterman– The idea of harvesting body organs and decisions about that being made my parents… I would NOT want to experience that, thank you very much!

Delirium (Delirium, #1)

DeliriumLauren Oliver– The idea of being inoculated against love really makes me sad.

Divergent (Divergent, #1)

Divergent Veronica Roth– I don’t like the idea of this world either. It scares me!

1984

1984George Orwell– I haven’t read this book (I know, I know. I’m reading it this year!) but I definitely don’t like the sound of it.

Which worlds would you really not like to live in? Feel free to leave a link to your post and I’ll stop by!

Ten Series That I Have Quit!

toptentuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the wonderful The Broke and The Bookish. This week’s list are the Top Ten bookish things we want to quit, or have quit. We could be creative with this list, but all of my creativeness has seem to have disappeared! I thought I’d look at ten series that I have given up on. Me being me, I’m quite happy to be persuaded to continue if it’s really a book series you love…so let me know!

As ever, click on the book image to get to Goodreads!

Matched- Ally Condie

Matched (Matched, #1)

I started the second book in the trilogy, but I just couldn’t get on with it. I found it unoriginal and not very exciting to read.

Eve- Anna Carey

Eve (Eve, #1)

I thought this book was okay, but I’m not excited enough about it to continue reading.

The Pledge- Kimberly Derting

The Pledge (The Pledge, #1)

Again, another series I could take or leave, so I decided to leave…

Vampire Academy- Richelle Mead

Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1)

I’m sorry! I know this series is really popular but it just didn’t do it for me. I don’t think I could commit to the rest of the series when I found the first book a bit dull.

Across The Universe- Beth Revis

Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1)

I thought this series was going to be my kinda thing, but it wasn’t. It was okay, I’m just not inspired to continue.

The Darkest Minds- Alexandra Bracken

The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds, #1)

I really wanted to like this series too, but I didn’t connect with the characters at all.

The Selection- Kiera Cass

The Selection (The Selection, #1)

I was happy with it finishing with The One, I just have no interest in the rest of the books!

The 5th Wave- Rick Yancey

The 5th Wave (The 5th Wave, #1)

The 5th Wave took me ages to get into and then hasn’t really stayed with me, so I’ve decided not to continue!

Partials- Dan Wells

Partials (The Partials Sequence, #1)

I remember liking Partials but it’s been so long since I’ve read it that I’ve lost interest in the books!

Rebel Belle- Rachel Hawkins

Rebel Belle (Rebel Belle, #1)

I enjoyed Rebel Belle but I’m not really interested in the next book, especially after very mixed reviews!

Do you think I should continue with any of these series? Which bookish things have you quit? Feel free to leave me your Top Ten lists and I’ll stop by!

-Mara Dyer-

I have so much love for Michelle Hodkin’s writing. This series is seriously crazy, but yet still so readable. It’s messed with my mind, and I although the ending wasn’t exactly what I wanted I still absolutely adore this series.

-Shatter Me-

I’m quite happy to say that I bought all of these books for a reason, they weren’t just impulse buys! I bought My Life Next Door and Everneath as they were in my list of top ten books I wanted for Christmas. It meant that I really wanted to read them. Everneath is also on my list of series that I want to read in 2014, as is Reached. I bought Boys Don’t Knit, Weirdos vs Quimboids and Pop! as they could be part of my new feature where my friend Luna picks a book or two for me to read a month. I’m doing this because she recommended such awesome reads last year. She gave me a list… and I ended up buying them all. Oops!

My phone network does Priority Moments where you can get some free things. I noticed an offer for a Richard and Judy Spring Reads 2014. I participate in this book club, so I jumped at the chance to get a free book. I picked up a book and my friend with the same phone network got one for me too. Bonus!

What have you added to your shelves this week? Please feel free to leave a link and I’ll come and visit you!

14 series on my radar for 2014…

I’ve mentioned before that there are so many series that I have yet to read, or series that I’ve started but not got around to finishing. It seems that almost every book I read these days is a series! I can’t keep up!

Series that I need to complete:

(Click on the book cover for my review, if I’ve read it already!)

-Mara Dyer-

8591107 12950372 15768409

I have so much love for Michelle Hodkin’s writing. This series is seriously crazy, but yet still so readable. It’s messed with my mind, and I NEED to know how it ends with The Retribution Of Mara Dyer. I hope I don’t hate the ending.

-Shatter Me-

13455782 13104080 13188676

I’ve absolutely been sucked into this world. I can’t wait to see how it finishes! I hope Ignite Me lives up to expectations!

-Under The Never Sky-

11594257 14742334 14288998

I haven’t loved this series as much as others I’ve read in 2013, but I’m still intrigued enough to see how it all ends. Into The Still Blue is the final book in the series.

-Chaos Walking-

2118745 6043849 8100904

This series is complete, but I’ve only read the first book in the series. I want to get around to reading the other two this year!

-The Lunar Chronicles-

cinder imagesCAUSDFEL 13206828

This is the only series on this list that won’t be complete by the end of 2014. I’m really enjoying it so far, and I’m looking forward to Cress being released this year. Winter will be published in 2015.

-Matched-

7735333 15812814 13125947

This series is complete, but I need to finish it! It hasn’t blown me away but I’m still intrigued to read it!

-The Selection-

10507293 16248068 15844362

This series is my guilty pleasure. It may not be the greatest piece of literature, but it’s fun.

I shall hopefully only have one series left to complete out of this selection (which is the last book in The Lunar Chronicles) if I managed to finish the series listed!

Series that I want to start:

(The first book in the series is listed, with the link going to Goodreads!)

9859436 9462812 9275658 8763666 9297774 12958103 9413044

I hope to begin these series this year! I’ve been meaning to start them for a while now.

Have you read any of the series that I’m yet to start? Which one would you recommend first? Let me know!
