Thoughts:

I was asked to read Life Knocks by Craig Stone. It sounded interesting, but another reason I wanted to read it was his email to me alone. I liked him immediately. Just as I anticipated given his funny and well written email, Life Knocks is incredibly funny and well-written. Craig writes about incredibly tough subjects but he has a talent for injecting much needed humour into the story. I actually laughed out loud at many lines.

Craig’s writing style is distinctive. I liked the main character/narrator Colossus. It’s not always easy to read about a person who is spiralling out of control and making silly decisions, but Craig makes it an enjoyable experience. He makes me feel for Colossus when I’d usually want to slap a person like that. I got an overwhelming feeling that Colossus just wanted to be loved. I wanted Colossus to make the right decisions and to find someone he loved. I was rooting for a character that I’d usually hate. Craig Stone must have talent!

If I have anything negative to say it is that it felt too long. I think some parts were unnecessary which somewhat stilted the story for me. That is something that could easily be corrected. There’s no doubt that Craig Stone is a talented, distinctive writer (and a lovely, funny person too!).

Would I recommend it?
Yes
