Ashes To Ashes (Burn For Burn #3)

Ashes to Ashes (Burn for Burn, #3)

How did I get it?:
I bought it!

Previously reviewed by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian:
Burn For Burn
Fire With Fire

Synopsis:

New Year’s Eve ended with a bang and Mary, Kat and Lillia may not be prepared for what is to come.
After Rennie’s death, Kat and Lillia try to put the pieces together of what happened to her. They both blame themselves. If Lillia hadn’t left with Reeve… If Kat had only stayed with Rennie… Things could have been different. Now they will never be the same.
Only Mary knows the truth about that night. About what she is. She also knows the truth about Lillia and Reeve falling in love, about Reeve being happy when all he deserves is misery, just like the misery he caused her. Now their childish attempts at revenge are a thing of the past and Mary is out for blood. Will she leave anything in her wake or will all that remain be ashes?

Thoughts:

I don’t want to ruin this book by going into too much depth. I do think this series is well worth exploring, especially if you’re into Gossip Girl/ revenge reads. It may not be the most well written book, but I think it’s easy to devour and get engrossed in. The only thing preventing me from giving this book four stars was because I felt the ending was incredibly rushed which was a great shame!

Ashes To Ashes starts well with Lilia and Kat trying to move on from what happened at New Years. Mary is coming to terms with what has happened to her. Mary is still seeking revenge, and she won’t give up until justice is done! I have absolutely loved reading about Mary throughout this series. I think she’s an amazing character. The tension has built throughout the trilogy and I was incredibly excited to read from Mary’s point of view for parts of the story.

I guess I was expecting a massive event, and I began to furiously read on eager to find out what was going to happen. It just felt like a bit of a let down considering how suspenseful this story has been over the series. As for one of my favourite characters, Mary, the way in which it ended with her just didn’t make sense to me. It was too contrived. A great shame as I’ve loved this series!

Would I recommend it?:
Yes! 3.5 stars

Despite my disappointment with the ending of this series, I do think it’s worth reading if you’ve read the other two! I do love the paranormal twist!

Bought:

Champion (Legend, #3) Ashes to Ashes (Burn for Burn, #3)  Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) Choker

These first three books were bought as part of my goal to read some series this year. I’m looking forward to finishing the Legend and Burn For Burn trilogy and also to step into some Maggie Stiefvater. I have heard many mixed things about Maggie Stiefvater’s Shiver… but I’m hoping I enjoy it! Choker came up recently as recommended on Amazon and I was immediately drawn in by the synopsis. It is a thriller, but it certainly doesn’t look like one from the cover!

Fire With Fire

10662420

How did I get it?:
I bought it!

Previously read by these authors:
Burn For Burn

Synopsis:

After the catastrophic events at the Homecoming Dance at the end of Burn for Burn, Lillia, Kat and Mary come face to face with the consequences of their actions – Reeve in the hospital. While Lillia and Kat begin to have reservations about moving forward with their revenge, Mary becomes convinced Reeve needs to get what is coming to him, no matter what. And as they agreed, each revenge plot needs to be completed. Lillia will make Reeve fall in love with her and then break his heart, just like he broke Mary’s. But spending so much time with Reeve, pretending to fall for him, Lillia finds she her fake feelings start feeling very real. And as devoted as the girls are to seeing this through, their friendship starts to sag under the weight of their secrets. Is revenge really worth all of this?

Thoughts:

I was a bit apprehensive to start this book. Not that I didn’t enjoy Burn For Burn, I certainly did. However, I wasn’t blown away by it. Yet, something still made me want to read Fire With Fire. The same has happened once more. Not blown away by this book, but intrigued enough to continue with the series. The twist in this book, didn’t come until the very end. I have to admit, it pulled me in and shocked me at the same time. I didn’t see it coming.

Fire With Fire follows the events after Burn For Burn ended. Reeve is in hospital, with a broken leg, following the dance. Lilia, Kat and Mary are feeling slightly guilty over what happened. However, Mary in particularly really doesn’t want their feelings to get in the way of their plan for revenge. Reeve is still the intended victim, but they need to find a new way to mess with him. Mary decides to use Reeve’s feelings for Lilia against him. She wants to break his heart like he broke hers.

I thought Fire With Fire was interesting enough, but it felt way too long. It’s over 500 pages, and it doesn’t have a massive amount of content to justify its length. Halfway through the book, I was beginning to lose interest in it. Luckily I kept reading, because it did eventually reel me back in.

The paranormal edge in this series is slightly confusing me. I just have to read the next book in the series, to see what on earth is going on. Fire With Fire ends with a massive cliff-hanger, which definitely makes me want to read the next instalment. I just hope the next book isn’t as long as this one. If condensed down, I think it would be an incredibly engaging read.

Would I recommend it?:
Yes!
